The American flag Popsicle stick craft is a terrific project for children and the hot days of summer are perfect opportunities for getting your kids involved in arts and crafts. Let them wear themselves out with outdoor pastimes and then when they are bored, bring them into the coolness and enjoy this fun Popsicle flag activity. Their creations can become holiday decor for all of the summer holidays. If you start early enough, they can be used in May for Memorial Day, June for Flag Day, July for Independence Day and September for Labor Day. Make them into plant pokes or attach them to garlands or wreaths.

7 craft sticks or Popsicle sticks.

6 mini craft sticks or Popsicle sticks

White glue

Red acrylic paint.

Navy blue acrylic paint.

White acrylic paint.

Standard paint brush.

1 inch star stamp or stencil.

Sponge brush

Wood skewer.

Wax paper

1.

Cover your work area with wax paper to keep the area clean and to prevent the pieces from sticking to the surface. Completely paint all sides of four large craft sticks with the red acrylic paint, three large craft sticks and two mini craft sticks with the white acrylic paint. Let them dry.

2.

Position the large red and large white craft stick stripes, side by side, starting with a red on top and ending with a red on the bottom. Glue a white mini craft stick across the stripes a 1/4″ from each short side. Set aside and let the connected stripes dry thoroughly.

3.

Completely paint all sides of the last four mini craft sticks with navy blue acrylic paint. Turn the red and white striped piece over to the front with the mini white craft sticks on the back. Glue the four mini blue craft sticks horizontally in the left-hand corner of the striped American flag, creating the blue field.

4.

Apply white acrylic paint to the star stamp using a sponge brush and stamp the center of the blue field. If you are using a star stencil instead, center the stencil on the blue field and use the sponge brush to lightly pounce over the stencil opening. When the paint and white glue are completely dry, turn the flag over with the backside up.

5.

Apply the white glue to the outside edge of the mini craft stick that is directly behind the blue field. Position the wood skewer in the white glue with the pointed end sticking out below the flag.

Making some outside decorations from wood, What should I use?

Hi, I am trying to figure out how to properly make some outside decorations. I love wood and that it what I prefer. I wanna make some scarecrows that I will use my jigsaw to cut. What wood do I use, I like to paint with craft paint just because I would get more colors since it is cheaper, and then how would I seal it? I don’t want this to be expensive I want to try this with some kids I am a nanny for as a craft so cheaper is better. Thanks for the help!

Hey Ashley! With a good polyurethane sealant that offers ultraviolet protection, you can use any wood you want along with any paint. The polyurethane basically forms a weatherproof shell and the uv protection protects against fading. Make sure the wood you are using is well seasoned (dry for at least a year or kiln dried) and the paint you apply is dry (to prevent smearing). Apply at least two coats of polyurethane and you should be good to go.

Importance of Arts & Crafts for Preschoolers

It is summer camp time everywhere. I know that there are tons of pirates and sailors out there with shows like Deadliest Catch and events like the Portland Pirate Festival you can’t miss it. Here is a way for your little sea monster to embark without loosing any of the bootie from your wallet. This is from part of the Make and Takes Summer Camp Series.

Supplies for Stick Raft:
Sticks
Hemp cord
Sail – we used bark off our palm tree, but you could use a stick with paper or fabric.

Directions
We began our craft by heading to a local park to collect some sticks that had fallen on the ground (and enjoy a play at the park at the same time).

Next daddy set to work cutting the sticks to roughly the same length and laying them out into the shape of the raft.

Once he had the correct number of sticks laid out, he tied them all together using the hemp cord.

Then he tucked a piece of bark in-between the sticks and used another stick to prop it up and it was time to set sail.

Now that we know our stick raft can float we cannot wait to take it to the beach or a little creek over the summer.

This is a great way to reuse stick from your local park or around your house. If there aren’t too many sticks you can always try using Popsicle sticks. I really like that they add a sail made of bark. It makes a great raft more fun.

After seeing a few s’mores recipes this week I went looking for a new way to do s’mores with some returning little campers. This is a great idea I found from Impress Your Kids. She made these great s’more necklaces that could be a great camp themed project for you little ones whether they have just returned to camp or are still a little too young to go to camp like their brother, sister or cousin. It is a great way to share the camping spirit without having to worry about burns or a marshmallow mess.

Supplies:
- dark brown craft foam
- light brown craft foam
- paper clips
- string for necklace
- scissors
- Foam Marshmallows

1. Cut out 2 identical squares of the light brown foam. These are your graham crackers! Cut out a smaller square from the dark brown foam. This is the chocolate!

2. Flatten out a paper clip leaving the smaller end intact. (I tried using a quilting needle and just stringing them all together. I couldn’t get it–maybe my string was too fat or my needle too skinny. Paperclips are more my style anyway!)

3. Stack your chocolate on top of one graham cracker. Then poke your paperclip through the bottom! If you do this out of order, your chocolate will be underneath or above the marshmallow and you won’t be able to see it.

4. Now, fold down the paperclip to be flush with the craft foam. It makes a nice little clamp that keeps everything from slipping off!

5. Then slide on your marshmallow (through the equator, not the north/south poles!) and your final piece of graham cracker!

6. Now twist that paper clip into a little circle and add a string!

This looks like an easy craft for just about any age. I think it is a fun way to remember camp and get the little ones in on camp this summer.

It is time to make some noise! I know that is usually the last thing we want to say to our kids on a Sunday when they are suppose to be quite in church and stuff but why not encourage that fun loving idea after? Here is a way for them to make some noise and music with Paper Plate Maracas I found on Enchanted Learning.

Supplies needed:
One or two paper plates
Dried beans, rice, or popcorn
Stapler
Paint, markers, or crayons
Optional: crepe paper streamers

1) Put a handful or two of dried beans, rice, or popcorn in a paper plate. Staple a paper plate securely on top of it.
[You can use a single plate for each maraca by folding a paper plate in half, adding the beans, then stapling the rim to itself.]
2) Decorate the maracas with crayons, markers, or paint.
3) Optional: Staple long crepe paper streamers to the maracas.
You now have great maracas that you can use to make music.

You can talk to you kids about how original maracas were made and play Latin music in the background and point out how they are used in each song. It makes for a fun afternoon especially if you can play a guitar that you kids can play along with when they are finished.
